The Research
We know from decades of research that tutoring – specifically targeted, intensive, high-dosage tutoring – is one of the most effective education interventions available.
In 2020, the National Bureau of Economic Research published a new landmark study (summarized here). Reviewing 96 studies conducted in the United States on a diverse set of tutoring programs, the study demonstrates that tutoring programs consistently lead to significant improvements in student learning outcomes:
- The average tutoring program can help students move from the 50th percentile to the 66th
- Reading tutoring programs are most effective in the lower grades
- Tutoring programs conducted during the school day are the most effective
- Teachers and paraprofessionals, like AmeriCorps members, are the most effective tutors
