The Tutor Experience

Our tutors are at the very core of delivering on our mission to ensure that all students gain the literacy skills they need to become successful, confident, and yes…joyful readers!

As a tutor, you will serve full-time with Joyful Readers for 9 months, from late August through late May.

For the first 4 weeks of your service year, we’ll train you alongside others in your cohort on how to build great relationships with students and teachers and become an effective tutor. Our experienced literacy coaches will guide you on student engagement practices and the reading curriculum that we use, Wilson Fundations.

When training is over, you’ll get started in your school, observing classrooms and getting to know students and teachers. Before you know it, you’ll begin tutoring a caseload of up to 22 students. Every day, you’ll tutor 10-11 pairs of students (30 minutes per session). When you’re not tutoring, you’ll be preparing lessons, reviewing data, and staying connected to your school community.  Your literacy coach will continue to meet with you once a week to guide you throughout the school year.

Throughout the service year, you will stay connected with your tutor cohort, attending teambuilding events, community dinners and continued trainings. You’ll also participate in other fun activities like the statewide AmeriCorps Celebration week, the Philadelphia AmeriCorps Launch, and other community-based events.
